Emerging from disaster

mudbird.felt.co.nz

Ceramics artist Gillian Weavers of Mudbird is making the best of a bad situation. Her Woolston property, like so many in Christchurch, has taken a hammering in the recent earthquakes. Silt flooded her property in February and again in June, swamping her garage and damaging her kiln. However, Gillian isn’t one to be put off by a spate of natural disasters. She took the silt and made it into something beautiful.

Japan disaster relief project: donate handmade

New Zealander Yumiko Olliver-Gray has family in the Sendai region of Japan, and with her cousin, a teacher at Fukudamachi Kindergarten, she’s coordinating a disaster relief project for the kindergarten of almost 200 children.

Following the earthquake, staff at the kindergarten have been working hard to clean up and are now ready to welcome the children back. Whilst most of the children are safe, some have lost their homes, leaving them without clothing, toys and basic necessities. So here’s where you come in – you can help by donating handmade new items.

Crafting for Christchurch: FeltAid returns!

After the September earthquake in Christchurch last year, Sarah and Ana and a team of devoted volunteers set up FeltAid, a shop on Felt where sellers could donate their goods for sale, with 100% of the proceeds going to the Red Cross Canterbury Earthquake Appeal. The Felt community managed to raise a whopping $4,427 to help out the people of Christchurch in 2010, and as Christchurch deals with this massive second blow, FeltAid is coming to the rescue again.
