All I Want for Christmas Market, 10am–4pm Saturday 10 December, Christchurch
You may remember the Craft Collective from such awesome Christchurch markets as A Craft Christmas Market at Goodbye Blue Monday last year and this year’s Monster May Market. This Christmas they’re pulling out all the stops with the All I Want for Christmas Market from 10am till 4pm on Saturday 10 December at Shirley Intermediate School.
Christmas Encraftment, 10am–3pm Saturday 26 November, Christchurch
It’s a huge weekend for crafty Christmas shopping this week, with markets happening all over the show! In Christchurch, the place to be is Christchurch Girls’ High for Christmas Encraftment. Amongst the vast array of stalls you’ll find such loveliness as jewellery by Pretty Pear and Cloud Nine Creative, ceramics by Mudbird and The Busy Finch and the gorgeous clothing and accessories of Sailor Spy.
While many crafters find time flies when they’re in the creative zone, Court Theatre set builder Richard van den Berg is more aware than most of the minutes ticking by – he spends his spare time in his Christchurch home studio designing and creating clocks, which he sells in his aptly named shop, Kinetic Craft.
When you don’t like the way your surroundings look, you have two choices. You can either live with it, or you can do something about it. Technically speaking you could also move, but that’s not an option for Christine Reitze who lives in Sumner, Christchurch, because she loves being near the sea.
“I was looking at the containers which are being used to protect our streets from falling rocks and finding them really unattractive in that context. Normally I quite like shipping containers, but in Sumner they are just an ugly reminder of the June earthquake, when the cliffs started to come down. I decided I needed to do something,” says Christine.

The loss of Christchurch’s fabulous High Street shopping precinct and many of Lyttelton’s lovely shops has left Christchurch with a distinct lack of independent boutiques and gift shops to discover up and coming designers…but all is not lost!
Spring Encraftment, 10am–3pm Saturday 10 September, Christchurch
Put some Spring in your step at Villa Maria College Hall in Christchurch this weekend for a day of crafty shopping at Spring Encraftment. What better way to herald Spring than gathering up a few friends and heading along to spend your pocket money on gorgeous handmade goodies by some of the South Island’s most talented makers. There’ll be great coffee and tasty treats to indulge in too.
Crafty Business, 7.30pm Monday 5 September, Christchurch
Crafty Business is on a roll – three in a row! Takes more than earthquakes and blizzards to get Christchurch crafters down.
Ceramics artist Gillian Weavers of Mudbird is making the best of a bad situation. Her Woolston property, like so many in Christchurch, has taken a hammering in the recent earthquakes. Silt flooded her property in February and again in June, swamping her garage and damaging her kiln. However, Gillian isn’t one to be put off by a spate of natural disasters. She took the silt and made it into something beautiful.
