It’s the season of Matariki, the beginning of a new year.
Traditionally, different iwi celebrated Matariki at different times. For some it was when Matariki (the Pleiades) rose in May or June. For others it was celebrated at the first new moon, or even full moon, following the rising of the constellation.
In the 21st century it is marked at the new moon following the rising of Matariki. It’s a time to celebrate the safe storage of the harvest, remember those lost in the last year, tell stories and teach skills, and look forward to new beginnings.
You can celebrate Matariki with kite flying (kites are seen as connectors between heaven and earth), by sharing family stories and kai with friends and whānau, or by learning (or teaching) a skill. How about having a go at weaving a harakeke whetu (flax star) with the tamariki?
