Jack Faulkner of The Cabin Supply Co hails from Scotland, first coming here for a ski season six years ago. Constantly thinking about the next thing to make and learn, Jack’s so far dabbled in silversmithing, ceramics and letterpress (and leatherwork of course!) – and the back pocket of their jeans always has a stash of bits of paper with doodles on them. The Cabin Supply Co reflects Jack’s passion for travel and adventure, even if it’s just getting away for a quick weekend camping and hiking trip.
What do you make?
I make leather accessories and adventure-inspired graphical prints.
How did you get into your craft?
How I got into leather work was just a case of not being able to find a nice leather keychain that I liked in New Zealand, so I decided I would just make my own. The print side is sort of an extension of my background in design and my love for adventures. I wanted to combine them and use photographs I’d taken on my own travels/adventures to inspire others to get out there.
Do you have formal training or qualifications in your craft?
I have formal training in graphic design, but am self-taught when it comes to leather work. I’d really love to go on a leather work workshop and really develop my skills even further.
Your favourite materials, tools and processes?
I would say obviously leather, but I do also love wood, which is a material that I’m keen to use for some products in the future.
What inspires you?
It sounds obvious, but good design and awesome adventures – they truly are my two biggest passions in life.
Is there a philosophy behind your work?
Make stuff that I myself want to own: if I wouldn’t use it, wear it or frame it then it doesn’t make the cut for a Cabin Supply Co product.
Your favourite feedback from a customer:
I’ve had a lot of people say some very nice things about my products. This one particularly stands out: “Jack was so kind and helpful! I love love love their products and my boyfriend loves his gift!!!! Thank you, Jack! The attention that goes into each order is the cherry on top! The item came in the cutest pouch. 🙂 Thank you !!!”
What are you currently listening to?
Usually BBC Radio One – it keeps me in touch with what’s happening back in the UK.
Describe your workspace:
My workspace is the corner of our tiny, tiny living room. I have made it into a practical workspace that is also inspiring. It’s got to look good as well as function, in my opinion.
What’s your favourite childhood book and why?
Chicken Licken, although I have no idea why, as it’s so sinister!
A favourite quote:
“The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.” – Steve Jobs.
Do you have any pets?
My partner has a bunny, so I consider him to be my step pet!
If you were a crafty superhero, what would your name and superpower be?
Hmmm, not sure, but I would like the power to create more time – I just never seem to have enough of it – and maybe the power to remove all calories from chocolate!
What would your advice be for those starting out in a crafty business?
Just get stuck in, make what you have a passion for, and get it out there into the world.
What was the last handmade item you bought and what attracted you to it?
I recently went over to Paul Melser’s pottery studio in the Wairarapa and bought a considerable amount of stunning crockery – we got a bit carried away! He has the most amazing studio setting, and beautiful pottery.
What’s in store for the rest of 2015 and the coming year?
The rest of 2015 will be preparing for Auckland Fair on the 6th of December, then a big rest over Xmas and the New Year (with a few adventures), then lots of adventuring at the start of 2016 to inspire even more designs and products! 🙂

Awesome work, very outdoorsy-Kiwi.
These are so practical and look nicely hardwearing. Great products!
Love the solid, earthy feel of the leather pieces. They are something I think Ron Swanson would be proud to own! I’m going to shoot over to your shop now an check it out.
