My name is Chris O'Regan and I work in the medium of Celtic Metalwork.
This piece is inspired by the Book of Durrow,a 7th Century Celtic Christian manuscript. It is the oldest complete Insular Gospel Book still existing.Preceding each of the 4 Gospels was a 'carpet page' which were filled with intricate geometrical patterns.
From one of these pages I took a small part of the design and drew the resulting work.
Each piece is hand-etched,patinated,(chemically coloured) by me so every piece is unique.
A resist is applied of the pattern to the copper,so when it is etched in acid,a bottom layer is eaten away and a top layer is left where no copper is dissolved.
The piece is then dipped into a chemical liquid that turns it entirely black, permanently.
It is sanded with sandpaper stripping the patination off the top layer revealing the copper but leaving it black on the lower surface.
Each work is sealed with an acrylic spray to protect the work.
Supplied with an adjustable roped polyester cord (NZ made)
Comes with a card with a description of the work and how it is made.
Made from recycled copper.
Size 70 mm (2 3/4 1 inches)
