HANDMADE 2011, 4–6 June, Wellington

The much anticipated inaugural HANDMADE symposium kicks off in Wellington this weekend, bringing together dozens of awesomely talented crafty peeps to share their skills and knowledge in more than 150 workshops, masterclasses and talks over the course of Queen’s Birthday weekend.

From chocolate making, spinning, sewing and e-textiles to cultivating bonsai, upcycling, printmaking and bookbinding, there’s a massive selection of classes to choose from, and if you haven’t booked your tickets yet, you’d better get in quick – some sessions have sold out already!

HANDMADE 2011 features classes and presentations by such amazing makers as Ruth Pretty (Ruth Pretty Entertains), Annah Stretton, Steve Joll (Baking for Blokes), Martin Bosley and Fifi Colston.

And how’s this for cool? Even if you’re not attending a class or talk as part of the symposium, you can still grab a $30 ticket for the Meet the Makers & Pop Up Store Party at Te Papa from 6.30 till 7.30 on Saturday night to mingle with the speakers, makers and attendees of HANDMADE 2011. As well as refreshments (including wine and cheese, yum!), a selection of pop-up shops will provide the opportunity to nab some awesome products handmade by the experts presenting and teaching their crafts over the weekend. Our little Felt delegation (Rose and I) will be there too – come along and say hello!
