I see my role in Hinemoana Nui Designs as one of 'gatherer' as I source shell, stone, wood, new and vintage sterling silver pieces for the designs. My favourites include the myadora striata shell that I colllect myself from northern east coast beaches and sourcing vintage paua to redesign and breathe new life into. I keep my designs as natural as possible and avoid the use of glues and resins when possible allowing the pieces to breathe and be kind to the skin of the wearer. All the pounamu is New Zealand sourced. My collection at times also includes beautiful vintage and antique pieces of kauri gum that come with the unique history of being fashioned by gum diggers from the late 1800's and early 1900's. My inspiration comes from Papatuanuku herself as I explore the taonga/gifts she so generously provides us to create with.
