I'm Jolene, the maker behind Hawthorn Bags.

My journey here began many years ago, when my mother taught me to sew on her old Singer sewing machine at the kitchen table. I sewed mainly for myself and family, until travel and having a family of my own took over. I rediscovered my love of sewing and fabrics when looking for a new handbag. My search led my down this beautiful rabbit hole of creating a bag from scratch - looking through the gorgeous patterns from so many talented designers, locating the perfect fabric and hardware, and finally seeing it all come together!

My business name comes from the tree, also known as the May Tree, in memory of my precious mum, Irene May, whom I also share a birthday with in May.

All my pieces are handcrafted in my studio in Auckland. They are one offs or limited editions and are crafted with functionality, durability and charm in mind. Please feel free to contact me with any specific requests.
