We started Awhitu Soap Co when we moved to the beautiful Awhitu Peninsula in 2017. The dream began with a bare paddock and a single magnificent pohutukawa tree. 6 years later, we've added a little house, a tiny studio, 1500+ native plants and trees, 14 chickens, 7 sheep, 2 dairy goats, a cat, and a huge number of edible herbs, flowers, fruits and vegetables. Our self-sufficiency journey is ongoing.

We started making bar soap initially because we were sick of using harsh liquid soap and palm oil-based products to keep clean. Everything mass-produced seems to have far too many preservatives and chemicals in it. We've since included luscious skin creams and lip balms to our range. We're constantly researching & developing new products...and we get to test everything which is the best part of our business :-)

We have a 3-fold philosophy. 1) to use a minimum of plastic; 2) to avoid palm oil; 3) to use as many local ingredients in our products as we can. We use herbs, hydrosols, flower extracts and juices sourced on our own land, and reach out to nearby neighbours for things like honey, milk, wax and sustainable farm products.

We are members of NZSMA (NZ Soap Makers Association). Our products are all bespoke and hand-made in small batches. We take great care to bring you items that are thoroughly researched, pH tested and batch-numbered. There are a huge number of soap-makers now, and while it is a relatively "easy" hobby to pick up, a very strong knowledge of the science of soap-making is required to ensure any product is authentic and safe. Our commitment is to bring you such products, and we stand by them all.

Thank you for checking us out :-)
