Illustration
Makomako or wineberry (Aristotelia serrata) leaves, flowers and buds are very appetising to possums. Māori children used to feast on the berries, which were also squeezed and strained to make a sweet drink. European settlers made jam and jellies and also made a wine from the berries. Infusions from the bark and leaves were used to treat burns, boils, sore eyes and rheumatic pains.

Mokimoki (Fragrant fern) was mixed with other oils to make scented products.
Kapokapowia (New Zealand bush giant dragonfly – top) are slow and noisy fliers, and are preyed on by rats, kingfishers and sometimes wasps.

Designed and printed in Wellington, New Zealand.
