Kamahi (Weinmannia racemosa) produces loads of creamy flowers in summer. The flowers are sweet-scented and prolific in November and December. Kamahi bark was a rich native source of tannins, used to dye cloaks and mats and to preserve fishing lines. Its timber, often protected by tapu, was durable and “lucky” for fishing rods. Māori used kamahi as a chest tonic and was given to people suffering from the flu, bronchitis and heavy chest colds. A rich source of tannins, Kamihi bark was used to bathe wounds, burns, etc since it has antiseptic qualities, that also speeds up healing.
Monarch butterfly (Danaus plexippus) is found in many places around the world, but is considered a New Zealand native because it became established here on its own.
Designed and printed in Wellington, New Zealand.
