Pīwakawaka – One of the cutest birds in the New Zealand bush! These little birds will often follow humans walking through scrub, forest or wetlands, eating the bugs they disturb. Their tail makes pīwakawaka quite distinctive, as well as their tiny “peeps” they produce when foraging or alarmed. Fantails are found throughout New Zealand, and can even be coloured entirely black in some cases! Their tails are used to quickly change direction when hunting for bugs such as flies, spiders, wasps, and beetles, although they sometimes also eat fruit. Head to www.doc.govt.nz to learn more about pīwakawaka and their significance to Māori…
