The red onion has a milder, sweeter flavour than its brown cousin, but like all onions it can be used raw or cooked to add distinctive flavour to a wide variety of dishes.
Sow in trays or direct in early spring in a sunny spot. Water sparingly but regularly. The bulbs will begin to swell once a certain day-length is reached and they are ready to harvest as soon as they’ve achieved the size you want.
Pull red onions on a sunny day and let them dry in the sun for a bit to ensure that there is a mimimum of rot-causing moisture left on them. Make sure you admire their beauty too - their colour and shine is gorgeous when fresh-picked!
