Big Bunny's Silver Beet

Also known as chard or Swiss chard, this iron-rich leafy green can be added to soups, stews, pies, pasta dishes, pizza and dips for flavour, nutrition and colour. Young leaves add interest to salads and slaws. Chooks love it too and it will add colour and nutrients to their eggs (feed sparingly).

Sow any time, in trays or direct, and thin when small. Silver beet likes sun or slight shade, fertile soil (dig in compost!), and regular watering. Once it’s established it has a very long cropping season - just keep picking the leaves until it finally shoots off to seed.

Silver beet is frost and heat tolerant, so it will grow year-round.
