Chaplets are small rosary style prayer beads, dedicated to a particular saint or purpose. This is a Chaplet of St Christopher, patron saint of motorists, travellers, pilots, mariners and archers.
St Christopher is a martyr from the 3rd century. His fame comes from a legend of him being a "Christ-bearer" (= Christopher). A powerfully built man, while wandering the world he came upon a hermit who lived beside a dangerous stream and served others by guiding them across. After instruction in the truth of God and took the hermit's place but rather than guide travelers, he carried them safely across the stream.
One day he carried a small child across the stream; the child's weight nearly crushed him. On the other side, the child revealed himself as Christ, and he was so heavy because he bore the weight of the world. Christopher's service at the stream led to his patronage of things related to travel and travelers, people who carry things, etc.
This chaplet has 9 black onyx beads in the traditional layout, separated with antiqued silver beads. At one end is a St Christopher medal, and at the other is a pewter crucifix. A pamphlet explaining the prayers and use of this chaplet is included.
