This pattern is one of the famous Kumiko woodworking patterns in Japan.

Mikado means 'emperor' in Japanese. People in ancient times in Japan believed this pattern symbolises power, stability, eternal life and prosperity.
This traditional pattern has been inherited from generation to generation in the Kumiko world, but my teapot stand is not an authentic 'Kumiko'.
I used a single wooden board and sawed the pattern out with a scroll saw instead of assembling and glueing tiny wood strips that were precisely measured, known as the Kumiko method.
It is more durable than making it with the traditional Kumiko method, and you don't need to pay careful attention to handle this teapot stand.

I applied two coats of food-safe natural oil and finished with a coconut/beeswax mixture.

Material: Ancient Kauri / Swamp Kauri (estimated more than 3,500 years old by the timber seller)
Size: Approx 11.5cm x 13.5cm, hexagon of side 6.7cm
Thickness: 1.9cm
