Original Nth & Sth Island Kokako Mixed-Media Portrait (A5)

Listing image #961210
My favorite New Zealand bird species happens to be a wattlebird, and I was inspired to create a bigger piece with contrasting colors.

Kōkako are medium-sized grey birds easily recognized by colored wattles on their cheeks. We have two kōkako subspecies in NZ; the North Island (blue wattles) and South Island (yellow/orange). The South Island kōkako has not had a confirmed sighting since 1967, but many people believe they're still out there.

My favorite bird is named Kahurangi (meaning 'blue' in Te Reo Māori). She was hand-reared after being discovered as a poorly chick. She's been at Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre since 2005, and has developed a huge personality. She'll come right up to you in her aviary and have a chat, bouncing over excitedly to greet you. The dream would be to meet her without the cage in the middle!

Because the South Island kōkako is (presumed) extinct, I improvised this piece by using two of my own photos of Kahu. She is quite the model!

This listing is for the signed original artwork. Open edition prints have been made of this piece.

Artwork is backed with cardboard, wrapped in a plastic sleeve and sent in a rigid mailer to avoid damage.

Check out my other listings if you are interested in purchasing a print of this piece.
