Artist's statement:
“The ginkgo has long been admired for its beauty and longevity. Some basic research informs me that ginkgo trees can live for a thousand years and that four ginkgos even survived the Hiroshima blast and are still growing today. These facts alone arguably earn this tree species its status as an uplifting symbol of strength, resilience, adaptability, peace, health and all-enduring hope.
For me, this artwork was not only about the initial impulsive joy of making experimental art from fallen autumn leaves while on a family trip to New Zealand’s stunning Eastwoodhill Arboretum. Later, as I began creating further depth, structure and texture through added art mediums, it became about channeling, navigating and processing intense personal and wider collective human emotion.
I made this artwork at the peak of difficult times. For me, the ginkgo leaves represent glimmers of hope to grasp on to in a sea of darkness – and the strength to endure and eventually overcome. And, while the dark is dark, there is still a certain ‘ruby’ glow about it – even the dark carries its own certain beauty and meaning.”
