About the original artwork:
The original artwork is a hand-coloured, handmade gel plate monoprint forming part of Keeley's wider leaf monoprint project. This was inspired by a magical family holiday to Gisborne's Eastwoodhill Arboretum in autumn 2021. Read on to the end for the full story.

Artist's statement:
“Acer palmatum, commonly known as the Japanese maple, is known for its spectacular autumn colour. The symbols attached to this tree species are many, particularly in the Japanese and Chinese cultures and around Asia. These symbols include beauty, great blessings, magnificence, peace, balance and, of course, the arrival of autumn – that most symbolic and poignant of Mother Nature’s transient seasons.

For me, this artwork was not only about the initial impulsive joy of making experimental art from fallen autumn leaves while on a family visit to New Zealand’s stunning Eastwoodhill Arboretum. Later, as I began creating further depth, structure and textural qualities using additional art mediums, it became about channeling, navigating and processing intense personal and wider collective human emotion during tumultuous times.

Looking back, working through the tricky task of creating some kind of natural order that made sense to me − from relative chaos (a random, impulsively made experimental leaf print) − was a cathartic process.”

The story behind Keeley's leaf monoprint project:
Several years ago Whanganui-based artist / printmaker Keeley Eastwood and photographer Bradley Mosen attended a ‘bee forage’ workshop being run by Canadian Dr Linda Newstrom-Lloyd from an open garden near Hawera, South Taranaki as part of the annual Taranaki Garden Festival.

The workshop’s focus was which kinds of flowering plants and trees to plant in your garden to provide the best nutrition for foraging bees.

Dr Newstrom-Lloyd is a specialist in pollination ecology and flower biology and is associated with the ‘Trees for Bees NZ’ programme. At the time she ran the workshop, she was carrying out related research at Gisborne’s ‘Eastwoodhill Arboretum.’

And so, it was at this Taranaki-based bee / garden workshop that Keeley and Brad first heard about Eastwoodhill Arboretum − and they set a goal to one day take a road-trip to Gisborne and visit this global safe haven for threatened and endangered trees.
In autumn 2021 their wish came true as they and their young son finally had the opportunity to do just that − and they spent what they describe as a ‘magical family holiday’ at the Arboretum.

They enjoyed many-a-walk through the sanctuary’s woodland tree groves − delighting in wading through mound upon mound of fallen leaves and exploring the sanctuary's stunning autumn colour in full.

While doing so, they also endeavoured to capture the sanctuary’s essence and beauty through their art.

While Brad used his photography skills to capture what he could by camera, Keeley and their son set about collecting as many different fallen leaves as they could carry back to the common room − the cosy hub where the family spent their evenings while staying at the Arboretum.

Using these leaves, Keeley then partook in some epic experimental on-site printmaking sessions – and this is what kicked off her ongoing ‘leaf monoprint’ art project.

In September 2022, Keeley and Brad launched the results of their artistic efforts - in the form of Keeley's handmade monoprints and Brad's photography - at their 'Capturing the Fall' exhibition at Hawera's Lysaght Watt Gallery.

In recognition of the artistic inspiration it provided – and in an effort to help raise awareness of the sanctuary and its global work − Keeley and Brad will donate to the Arboretum a percentage of the sales proceeds from this work.
