Alon: a single long earring of cruelty-free cockerel feathers and upcycled brown leather

This long, single earring features rooster feathers, a strip of tan-coloured leather, and antiqued-brass coloured beads.

The strips of tan-coloured leather are hand-cut from old upholstery samples that would otherwise have been thrown away. The feathers are cruelty free – that is, they were moulted naturally by their avian owners, then collected, cleaned and sterilised before being mounted in these earrings. The supplier from whom I buy my feathers does not support factory farming or the mistreatment of animals in any way. These feathers are from roosters, and have shades of chestnut, rust, black, dark brown, and cream. They are quite fluffy at the top of the earring.
I have wrapped the leather and feathers together with non-tarnish, artist's quality wire, and worked three antiqued-brass coloured beads onto the leather strips.

'Alon' is pronounced 'ah-LON', with the emphasis on the second syllable. It means 'oak tree' in Hebrew.

This feather and leather earring is lightweight, and measures 22.2 cm from top to bottom. The feathers are approximately 5cm wide at their widest point when the earring is laid flat.
The antiqued-brass coloured ear-hook is without nickel.

Feathers are delicate and thus feather jewellery should be gently treated. Avoid crushing this earring, and handle it as little as possible. Storing it hanging will help it to keep its shape for as long as possible.
