Nature Journal
NZ $15.00
This is a soft-covered journal: the covers are made from a lovely handmade Trade Aid paper, with very fine bamboo-style leaves and orange petals embedded in it. It is bound using a Japanese style stab binding, but the pages are yellowy-cream single sheets (40) of rather than double as is traditional.
It is sewn with brown linen thread.
The book measures approximately 155 x 215mm.
I believe that if words and ideas are worth thinking, they are deserving of a beautiful place in which to be written. However, I also know how intimidating a blank book can be, so I urge you to just start writing in your book, without worrying about your handwriting, or your grammar or your spelling - it's the ideas that matter, the ideas that are important to express.
* A commonplace book was originally a place to make a collection of such sayings or proverbial wisdom, but then extended to themed collections of other kinds.
** I found the idea of a writing studio in a book by Sandford Lyne, 'Writing Poetry from the Inside Out'. He points out that an artist needs a workplace, a studio with good light and inspiring surroundings. Similarly, a writer needs a studio in which to work, but the writer's studio is far more portable! You could staple together a bunch of printer waste and write on the clean side - but your writing deserves better - a beautiful place in which to work. Keep the waste paper for shopping lists!
