CREATING A RIPPLE EFFECT

Zealand Art is a home based business based in Addington, Christchurch. Zealand Art has a commitment to community and environmental good. Stuart Norton, a photographer and the owner of Zealand Art, is concerned that many local businesses have closed or moved offshore during the financial downturn and after the quakes. He is equally concerned about environmental issues including climate change.

Like other people Stuart wanted to do something meaningful about these problems. His business slogan of ‘Good for Planet – Good for People’ reflects this. This aligns with the ‘Triple Bottom Line’ business philosophy of considering 1) Planet 2) People / community good and 3) Prosperity.

One of the product lines Stuart has developed is greeting cards. These cards are printed by a Christchurch business. Zealand Art donates a percentage of profit to community organizations. If we don’t find innovative ways to support local businesses and community organizations we are in danger of losing them.

Most shop bought cards cost around $5.00 to $6.00 so Zealand Art Ltd cards at $3.20 per card are excellent value. There are cheaper cards around including packs of 10 cards for around $11.00. These cheap cards are inevitably printed in Asia with labour that is paid a wage that perpetuates poverty. Cheaper cards are usually printed on card that damages the environment.

Zealand Art Ltd cards:
1) use high quality, eco-friendly card that has been independently audited
2) are printed in New Zealand by people who are paid fairly
3) donate a percentage of profit to community organizations

Stuart knows his efforts are small given the size of the issues our economy, communities and the environment face, however small actions often create a ripple effect. If we genuinely walk the talk we do contribute to meaningful change.
