Erica Wells from The Craft Room works with remnants from the past to craft lovable treasures of such quality they are sure to become tomorrow’s heirlooms. Amongst her group of creative friends it’s known as Upcycling.

Erica is drawn to items with a sense of their place in history. Whether it is zany 60’s colours or 70’s paisley, many of the fabrics provoke an emotional response amongst the adult buyers and sheer delight from the little ones lucky enough to receive them as a gift.

Her extensive stash of eclectic fabrics is made up of op-shop finds, remnants and donations from friends making each horse quite unique.

“They all have different personalities,” says Erica. “I love rummaging through an op shop and finding beautiful fabric. I also love not quite knowing how each horse is going turn out when I start, before I mix and match the fabrics. I’ve also often already started the next one before I’ve finished the previous one simply because I’m drawn to the colour combinations!”

Erica comes from a long line of knitters and sewers, picking up her crafting skills as a child. “My mother who is an incredibly talented lady taught me so much over the years including knitting, sewing, embroidery and macramé just to to name a few crafts and I am so grateful that she did. It’s lovely to be now teaching my own children skills they can carry through their own lives and pass on. The kids also love helping me choose colour combinations and come up with great come designs.”

It’s not just the practical skills that Erica has inherited. Among her most treasured possessions are her grandmother’s sewing box and knitting basket which have both been passed down to her. While her pin container was previously her grandfather’s tobacco tin.

“Upcycling isn’t just a passion. It’s a way of life”.
