Rethreads emerged officially in 2007 through my love of textiles, passion for recycling and reconstructing, and from my punk rock/indie craft roots.
Rethreads creates clothes that are affordable, lasting favorites that you can wear for a few seasons then shred and compost at the end of their long wearing life. When you buy a rethreads garment you not only get a one off unique garment - you get to adopt a whole set of values that feel fantastic to live by!
I abhor the waste of the fashion industry, and the effect advertising has on girls and women, so I feel horrified when rethreads is referred to as a"fashion label". I call it “Guerilla Clothing.” Of course, if there was no fashion there would be no 'rethreads' so it's an interesting love-hate relationship. I hate fashion but I love cutting up and remaking your thow-aways.
Raw materials (clothing) are sourced locally - keeping travel miles as low as possible. I aim to be a zero waste business, our scrap textile gets put into cushions, paper is recycled, and everything that can be reused by the local kindergarten or garage gets sent there.
I love making money, (of course!) and I also value the connection with other (mainly) women that comes from just standing around blabbing about clothes. I’m not trying to sell you something as much as I enjoy playing dress-ups. I bring experiments to market as well as the tried and true favorites, so our conversations can be an big part of refining a design. In fact, often I don’t know what size a garment is until a few of you have tried it on!
I’ve developed rethreads with similar values I aim to live by - trust, generosity and a dollop of healthy subversion. So if you have always wanted to be an activist but never known where to start and don't have the time - your contribution to a world fit for our grandchildren are only a few mouse clicks away!
For 2012, I aim to have more clothing for sale online, and be more organised with my mailing list, as it can be hard to figure out just where rethreads is located at any given time. If you want to find me in the meantime -some links below can help you get started. Thanks for viewing! Briar
