Kumihimo is the ancient art of Japanese braiding. Braids are handmade by interlacing stands using a Marudai (round stand) and Tama (bobbin). Each braid follows a sequence to produce the desired effect: round, square, flat - thin or thick.

Kumihimo was mainly associated with Samurai who used the braids to secure their armour and for wrapping sword handles.

Sue learned this facinating craft at the Japanese Cultural Center while living in Hawaii.
