While visiting the Indian Pueblo in Taos, New Mexico and an older Indian man told me the story of how he made the porcupine necklace I purchased. The collection of the quills, deer leather, and how he made the string to hold it all together. I cherished the necklace throughout the years. I then became a biologist and worked at a wildlife center in Colorado where I presented a captive North American Porcupine to the public to help them understand these interesting creatures. As I showed people how his quills released, it dawned on me that I could try to re-make my porcupine quill necklace I had treasured for so many years! I spent countless hours working these tiny delicate quills into beads. I love the feel and look of the quills, and discovered the more robust, larger African porcupine quills and began working them into beads also. So here I am, making porcupine quill jewellery, using deer hide to make spacers, and using sinew to string it all together. I have also found a love in the beautiful patterns and markings of natural game bird feathers and have made a lot of fashionable feather earrings and hair pieces! I'm always adding something new so remember to check back often!
