Handwoven and -dyed NZ merino cloak
Blonde Viking. Handwoven and finished hooded cape in super soft merino.
Hooded cloak from the heart of Aotearoa. This original design cloak has been hand finished and sewn with great attention to detail.
Woven in pure fine merino yarn. The base was hand dyed in low immersion to create a subdued blonde, just a hint of yellow. The cloak was woven in hand dyed sky toned blue. The lower edge of one side has a trio of pattern repeat in navy to complement the woven band.
The 50″ (127cm) narrow band was woven in cotton on my Inkle loom in four different colours: a base of ivory and chamois, with navy and a bright blue. The band has been hand stitched to the inner neckline.
The cloak rests on your shoulders as a casual coat, but can also be worn tied together – loosely or tighter – in the front. The cloak is especially attractive by tying and then securing to one side in the front with a brooch or pin. This gives added protection against cold and wind to the chest area. Hood up or down. The front of the cloak can also be boho belted like a poncho garment, with the back remaining free. Perfect for an evening out, or snuggling on the sofa or deck. Since Merino is a hollower fibre than other wools, the garments offer incredible warmth while remaining very lightweight.
The middle back and hood seams were machine stitched. All neatening of the seam allowances, the attachment of the hood and of the band have been entirely hand sewn and finished.
The cloak has been hand washed and dried, then pressed.
Materials: 100% fine NZ merino. Eyelash fringe. Hand wash only.

This one-off piece is Work 192. I never weave the same cloth or item twice. Every piece is unique and numbered, every creation has a story to tell.
The Merino wool I use has been farmed, processed, milled and spun in the South Island of NZ. This is the highest quality undyed base yarn I can buy in NZ. Merino wool comes from our Merino sheep and is renowned for its exceptional properties: its fantastic softness, durability, cooling/heating and breathability. The fibres of Merino are softer, finer and more sensitive than many other fibres – the main difference to other wools.
Dimensions: width 25 1/2″ – 65cm // length w/o fringe 122″ – 305cm // fringe 1″ – 2.5cm // Neck to back hem 37″ – 94cm. Brooch not included.
