Each of my items is original and many are bespoke (made specifically for the purchaser, to fit their requirements). As a lifelong learner, I love continuously trying new things and pushing the limits of my craft.
I have a BA (hons) in Theatre and Film Studies and enjoyed a successful career in physical, devised theatre with my performance company, the clinic, as well as teaching, travelling, touring, making costumes and directing several circus-theatre shows at Christchurch's Circo Arts school.
I grew up in a family where the arts and creativity were valued. My mother taught me to cook, garden, sew and knit, and my father had been an actor. Through the different phases of my life, my creativity has blossomed in different ways - writing, acting, directing, drawing, life modelling, sewing, knitting, crochet, embroidery, gardening and cooking. There is no one great love that tops them all - I enjoy the variety and freshness of moving between different media and styles, challenging myself (sometimes feeling that hard edge of "oh no, I bitten off too much with this one ...") and learning always.
It's always nice when someone buys a piece, and I do make things in the hope that others will enjoy them as much as I do. I love doing commissions and making things for friends. So much of what I make is gifted, and I try to remember to take photos so I don't forget all the things I've created over the years.
I started making meditation cushions (and mats) when I was living and volunteering as manager of a Zen Buddhist retreat centre in the Coromandel. After making 25 cushions and mats for the meditation hall, I started making them for friends and eventually started selling them more widely, some plain, some with embroidery, and some from vintage kimono fabrics. I love being able to support other people's practice of mindfulness, meditation and yoga and have had many happy customers.
