Use natural components, upcycle, recycle and make compost!

I learned to knit and sew at my mother’s knee, who also learned at her own mother’s knee. As I sit and work at my late mother’s sewing machine, which sits on my grandmother’s sewing cabinet I think not only of past generations but of future generations.

Help make that future possible by purchasing these sustainable products. It only takes small changes across the masses to make a difference. The concept of Leaving No Trace is to bring items to you that are handmade, for the most part using 100% natural and sustainable components.

Occasionally an item will be made that cannot make that claim. However, it is probably being upcycled into something that will continue its usefulness, therefore, delaying for the foreseeable future its arrival into a landfill somewhere.

We live in a world that we are learning is seriously under threat and the only way to change this is to change the way we do things and the things we use. I was brought up in a home where we upcycled, recycled, separated the rubbish, and made compost – long before it was trendy or necessary! And thank goodness it is trendy as it is becoming increasingly necessary.

Leaving No Trace offers products that are not “single-use, disposable, throw it away – get another one”. They can be used and laundered over and over and over. At the end of their use, these fully biodegradable items can be chopped up and thrown into the compost. If making compost isn’t on your agenda and these do eventually go to a landfill you will be safe in the knowledge that they will break down and can decompose over a matter of months. By not using single-use, throw-away items the volume of rubbish going to the landfills also reduces – we don’t want to keep filling up the land with rubbish that quite simply won’t go away.

Some items will be unique or may just be something I saw and liked and thought it would be fun to make. Other items will be things that we use daily, offering an environmentally friendly option.

There are fabrics in my stash that are leftovers from previous projects, fabric bought with no particular project in mind (I may have just loved the fabric!), and some bought for particular products. I’m enjoying using these fabrics to bring you various items that I hope some of you make a conscious decision to use.
