My name for this website is based on the name of the family farm - Cooldara where I grew up in the heart of one of New Zealand's spectacular rain forests - South Westland. When the sun shines it is one of the most beautiful places on earth with clear skies, fresh air and the crisp song of lots of native birds. Additionally and extra special for us was the Kotuku (White Heron) sanctuary was right on our backdoor.
Living in a rain-forest meant the weather forecast was often for heavy rains, thunder and lightning storms. Lengthy power-cuts often ensued because the fuses were blown on the power-poles. These times kept us all indoors and entertainment was accomplished by candlelight (or Tilly lamp if there was any kerosene) and sometimes just firelight if that was all there was. It was during these times my knitting skills were practiced and improved.
Our homestead (a draughty old villa) - was the place where I learnt to appreciate the true value and warmth of wool and hence my introduction to knitting needles. To this day wool remains my absolute favorite yarn, not only for its softness and warmth but also for its sustainable environmental properties, fire-resistance and moisture absorption without the ugly feeling of being wet. I have never put my needles down. After I left school and moved away from home, I continued to knit many items not only for my own family, but others as well.
I enjoy trying new patterns and techniques to challenge me and I like to knit all types of yarn and try new ones out. Please feel free to message me if you see anything in my shop you like. I'm willing to adjust yarn type if the pattern will allow.
Thank you for visiting and taking the time for a wee look around my shop.
