handcrafted felt artworks
I am lucky to live in stunning beautiful Central Otago. In 2018, I discovered felt making. I very quickly became quite obsessed with this beautiful textile made through the simple process of tangling the fibres of wool and silk with the assistance of water and soap. In 2020 as the world spent more time at home, I focused my unsettled mind on wet felting images of the land around me.
My felt ‘paintings’ are created using wool and silk rovings. These are dyed in rich colours which I lay out and through the process of wet felting form an impression of the original picture. I then use free motion embroidery and sometimes hand embroidery to add depth and movement in the image.
I also make three dimensional felted pods and a selection of other useful and beautiful items from this robust, natural and beautiful textile.
