Hand Carved Birch Wooden Tray
This is a small tray carved out of Birch wood. The wood was given to us by a friendly farmer as firewood at a campground in South Wairarapa. We decided to keep it and make something good with it after seeing its beautiful grains and unique colour tone. The dark and light colours reminded me of Yin and Yang.
After the wood had been sitting in our shed and air-dried for another half year, I decided to make a small tray or plate out of it. As I started carving, a branch knot was found at the end of the wood chunk, and it's been kept, the curly grains next to it look like a vortex, adding an extra shine. The tray is hand-carved using a hook knife, carving knives, and gouges. It's intentionally not sanded, and the cutting facets have been kept for a more rustic and artistic look.
It's finished with multiple coats of food-safe oil and should be hand-washed only.
