A stunning traditional Māori style Matau bone carving pendant, hand crafted in New Zealand by local artist Don Campbell.
It also features traditional bindings and an adjustable waxed braid cord.
Supplied in a traditional woven presentation bag.

The Matau is 45mm long (1.75 inches)

This piece is part of a set of real traditional style carved bone fish hooks that I made for a Māori TV fishing show. Several of these hooks were tied to flax and handlines and used to catch some very good sized fish proving just how effective these ancient simple carved bone fish hooks really were.
Similar in use to the modern day circle hooks, this particular style has the bait tied to the small eyelet at the bottom not threaded onto the hook itself.

The Matau is one of the most powerful symbols used in Māori culture as it represents prosperity, abundance and fertility.
It also is said to provide good luck and safety when traveling over water.
The wearer of a Hei-Matau is seen as a provider and protector who is strong willed and determined to succeed in life.
