New Zealand Whio - Blue Ducks - Hand-carved block print (Free shipping)
The New Zealand Blue duck, also known as the Whio is a unique and endangered species of duck only found in New Zealand.
My love of New Zealand wildlife and bush inspires me to illustrate, paint and carve our beautiful species and hopefully bring awareness to their plight.
This is a hand-carved, original piece of art, printed in 2 parts. First, a round piece of lino is inked (the grey blue) and printed onto acid-free paper, and allowed to dry overnight. Then, very carefully, a 2nd liino block, which has been meticulously carved with the drawn ducks is printed onto the preprinted blue circle. I use an antique cast iron book press to print and also the back of a wooden spoon to ensure I get all the details. This particular print has a great texture due to the interaction between the type of lino block and the paper i used.
All the inks are water-based and no harsh chemicals are used. The colours are all hand mixed to achieve the correct hue and rolled out with a brayer onto the carved block. I have included so photos of my process
Because this is a hand-made process - no two prints are the same and every print will have remnants of the printing process (little black flecks, carving marks or areas that are lighter or not as solid as the rest of the print) these marks make every print unique.
