Coriander, sometimes called cilantro, is a soft herb with a very distinctive scent and flavour, which can grow to about 50 cm tall.

The leaves are generally used fresh, often as a garnish, and are found in many Asian, African and South American dishes, such as salads, salsas, chutneys, dals and stir-fries. The seeds are used whole or ground in dishes like curries and dukkahs, and pair well with cumin. The roots are prized for their deeper flavour.

Coriander also attracts beneficial insects.

Sow direct in early spring, in rich soil and light shade. Coriander dislikes being transplanted.
