Matariki - linocut

This is a linocut I created of the 9 stars of Matariki over Aoraki/Mount Cook. Matariki is the Māori name for the cluster of stars which rises in mid-winter and signals the start of a new year. 'Matariki', the biggest star is the mother of the other 8 stars in the constellation.
I carved my design into a lino block then inked and printed it using my Intaglio Fine Art Printing Press. As each print is inked by hand then rolled through the press each one is slightly different. Here I have used a kahurangi/blue waterbased ink. The size of the linocut is 15cm high by 22cm wide and the size of the paper is 20cm high x 25cm wide making it easy to source a ready made frame.
