Bone Carving: Bespoke Hei Matau

This carving takes its inspiration from the story of Maui and the fishing up of Te Ika a Māui (the North Island). When Māui and his brothers were fishing at sea on their waka, Māui’s brothers became concerned that they had ventured too far from the shore and begged Māui to turn back. Knowing that a bigger fish lay on the horizon, Māui resisted his brother's pleas and decided to push on further to sea. Eventually, Māui landed a large stingray which is now known as the fish of Māui (the North Island). This piece symbolises through its design the story of Māui and the elements of resilience, courage, and determination - the qualities of Māui. It is an ideal gift for someone who is prepared to step outside of their comfort zone in search of greater rewards. This piece is fitted with an adjustable cord to allow for a personalised fitting. The piece comes with its own flax Kete for safekeeping.

Size: 9cm long and 4cm wide
Material: Beef bone

Original design by Adrian Woodhouse (Kāi Tahu)
