Geographicum—Lichens on volcanic scoria evolved from ideas of a chunky-knit jumper. I began combining creamy wools and cotton in scrumble and freeform knitting, and weaving thick creamy wool through rug canvas. But the work looked glacial rather than warm, so I added earthy colours, stitching the knitting and weaving canvas to deliberately-frayed linen fabric to create a 3D effect.

The work is named for map lichen Rhizocarpon geographicum, which “forms vivid patches whose beauty and complexity echo satellite images of the Earth” (NZ Geographic)—but you might also see molten lava, cooling as it flows down the mountainside.

Main colours: Cream, rust orange+red, dull green

Method: Stitching art—mainly long stitch, with couching and knots, on tapestry canvas. Framed in a wooden box frame with a stand
Fibres: Wools—art wool with metallic sparkle, knitting and tapestry wools; cotton thread, linen fabric; mounted on black card in a box frame of natural wood with off-white surround.
Canvas: fine tapestry canvas

Frame: plain white, with wide white mat board
Size: 39 x 31 cm (framed)
Display: Frame has a hook for wall hanging
