Out of the Ashes

These ceramic moths were first fired to 1000 degrees C in an electric kiln to vitrify them.

During the winter I have individually fired each one a second time for the burnt smokey effects. These smokey effects on ceramics are usually achieved in a fire built in a hole in the ground ("pit fired") but I have adapted this process so I can do this in my home log burner. The colours are random and created by the flames, smoke and heat reacting with the clay and with various materials (such as sawdust, seaweed, and wire) which are placed around the moth. At this stage I have very little control of this process - each one is unique and can not be replicated. The antennae are made from small feathers.

Each moth is around 11cm from wingtip to wingtip and can be wall hung on a small nail (supplied).Cost includes standard postage.

I want you to be happy with your purchase. In the unlikely event that there are some issues please contact me through the Felt message system or directly so I can put it right.
