Upcycled Plastic Baskets – set of 2 – Teal

These nesting baskets are handwoven in New Zealand from strips of plastic upcycled from cornflakes packaging. Two layers of plastic are ironed together to fuse them into a stronger plastic. This is cut into strips which are folded lengthwise and stitched along the length to prepare for weaving. The size of the baskets is adjusted by altering the width of the strips for each basket.

These are great as treasure baskets, toy baskets, or a gift for a zero-waste friend. They would make a great conversation-starter about the importance of reducing our reliance on single-use plastic packaging and encouraging people to think more creatively about the items they buy and how these can be reused and repurposed in creative ways.

Landfill waste and plastic pollution are massive issues worldwide and we all have a responsibility to make choices that reduce our waste and preserve our beautiful planet. I am actively making changes to my purchasing habits to refuse and reduce my soft plastic waste as much as possible. But for the soft plastic that still finds its way into my house, I am determined to repurpose as much of it as possible.

By purchasing these baskets, you are helping to divert about 20 plastic bags from soft plastic recycling or landfill. Long offcuts of plastic are used as the core material for my plastic coil baskets, and small offcuts are placed in soft plastic recycling.
