Braided Rag Rug – Jewel Tones

This one-of-a-kind braided rag rug is handmade in NZ out of old t-shirts cut into strips. The technique uses a 4-strand braid where the strands are linked into the previous round as the braid is coiled around.

Add some colour to your lounge, kitchen, bedroom or hallway. Or use as a play mat for the kids. Makes a great zero-waste gift.

The fast fashion industry results in a shocking amount of textile waste ending up in landfill. Op shops receive large volumes of clothing donations but unfortunately much of that does not end up on the racks to be sold. This braided rug is made of old t-shirts and jersey knit clothing that is too old, stretched, faded, or otherwise not suitable to wear or sell in an op shop. It takes about 10 t-shirts to make a rug, so by buying this rug you are diverting a lot of textile waste from landfill.

The offcut waistbands and cuffs from the t-shirts are used to make dog toys (please see my other listings). Tiny offcuts are composted if they are 100 % cotton or natural fibres.

Not recommended as a bathmat as it takes a long time to dry.
