This sun protective mineral balm contains zinc oxide which is effective at reflecting both UVA and UVB rays. This is a creamy balm with Calendula included for its reputation as a healing herb, and NZ Kanuka . This water resistant balm now comes in fun purple. Apply generously to exposed skin, and reapply as necssary given the SPF15 rating. 15g. Please indicate which colour you would like on ordering.

This mineral sunscreen contains Ecocert approved Zinclear as the sunscreening agent. This is a suspended Zinc Oxide emulsion that improves the SPF value of Mcginns Sunbalm. It contains Zinc Particles that fall into the Nano range, also making the balm non whitening on the skin.

Nano particles (NP) have gained notoriety in the past as they were suspected to penetrate the outer layer of skin, with the fear that when inside the body, it the Zinc Oxide could be toxic to cells, or cause free radical damage.

The Australian Government Therapeutic Goods Administration review of scientific literature involving NP in sunscreens states "there is no evidence of NP toxicity in Vivo (actual whole living people), as the NP stay on the outer dead layer of skin."

They said this in 2006. The review was updated and they said it in 2009, and again in 2013.

Again in 2017 the review was updated, and this is what they said "The NP in sunscreens do not pose a threat to your health." Please find this link to read more information in depth; https://www.tga.gov.au/behind-news/be-sun-smart-wear-sunscreen (18/11/19)

Zinc is a mineral that the body uses in its metabolism. Mcginns Sunbalm contains Vitamin E, a powerful antioxidant. Zinclear imparts a higher SPF capability than raw Zinc Oxide powder, as the latter is heavy, sinking in molten balm, providing unreliable UV ray reflection. Mcginns Zinclear containing mineral Sunbalm has an approximate SPF of 15. The risk of cancer causing UV damage to skin in New Zealand is high. To avoid UV damage, it is best to cover up and stay out of the sun, especially between 11 am -4 pm, September to April.
