Kahukura (Red Admiral) is well camouflaged when at rest because the underside of its rear wings
is a mottled collection of shapes and white/brown/black colours.

Harakeke will often support a large community of animals, providing shelter and an extensive food resource for tui, bellbirds, saddlebacks, short tailed bats, and geckos. Many insects enjoy nectar from the flax flowers. Traditional uses of the fibre were clothing, mats, plates to eat off, baskets, ropes, bird snares, lashings, fishing lines and nets. The nectar from flax flowers was used to sweeten food and beverages. Medicinal uses include the sticky sap or gum it produces, applied to boils and wounds and used for toothache. Leaves were used in binding broken bones and matted leaves as dressings. The root juice was applied to wounds as a disinfectant.
