Kōwhai (Sophora) is a favourite of the kererū who gorge themselves on both the flowers and the leaves. Te ngahere-forest lore has it – when the bright yellow flowers of kowhai bloom, in late winter and early spring, it is time to plant kumara. Pigment for yellow dye was extracted from the flowers, and the flexible branches were great for making houses and bird traps. All parts of the plant, but especially the ripe yellow seeds, are poisonous.

Kōwhai Ngutu–kākā (Clianthus puniceus) have two species, both are rare and threatened in nature, with less than 200 individual plants known in the wild. Its conservation status is Nationally Critical and is found only in New Zealand.
