KARAKA – NATIVE TREE OF AOTEAROA
Height: up to 12m tall
Age: 40–500 years
Uses: Karaka was so valued by Māori that it was one of the few trees cultivated for its orange fruits. Despite the fact that the seed contains an alkaloid, “karakine”, that is highly poisonous, the berries were a valued source of food. The raw flesh of the berry is edible, but it was the kernel that was most highly sought. The kernels were prepared by prolonged cooking and washing and could be eaten, stored for use over winter, or ground up into a type of flour for bread.

Designed and printed in Wellington, New Zealand.
