POHUTUKAWA – NATIVE TREE OF AOTEAROA
Height: up to 25m tall
Age: up to 1000 years
Uses: To Māori its distinctive red flowers signalled the arrival of summer. The boiled juice of the inner bark could cure diarrhoea, and the nectar was good for sore throats. Lower branches which curve down, but did not penetrate the ground to become roots, were ideal for one-piece fish hooks.
