TAWHAIRAURIKI – NATIVE TREE OF AOTEAROA
Height: up to 20m tall
Age: 300 years
Uses: The bark of Tawhairauriki (mountain beech) was used to produce a black dye for staining harakeke and tī kōuka fibre. Māori tradition has it that Maui killed a taniwha, whose blood was splashed on the surrounding beech trees. If you cut the bark you can see the sap run red.

Designed and printed in Wellington, New Zealand.
