Gannet - A4 print

Listing image #568961
Tākapu – New Zealand is home to the majority of Australasian gannets. They nest in dense colonies called gannetries and have a wing span of 1.8 metres! Gannets are large white birds with black-tipped wings and a distinctive yellow neck. They prey upon small fish such as pilchards and jack mackerel of which they dive for from quite a height and at speeds of up to 140km per hour! On returning to their nests, gannets will give their mate a present of sorts, usually seaweed, which helps maintain their life-long bond. Gannets also display greeting behaviours and dances to reinforce their pair bond – it’s like kissing your partner after a long day at work! With an estimated life span of 25 to 38 years, gannets are one of the longest living sea birds.
