Karearea / New Zealand falcon

Karearea / New Zealand falcon
Karearea – New Zealand’s native falcon, capable of flying at speeds over 100 kilometres an hour! Karearea are often mistaken for the swamp harrier (hawk) who fly much slower and often circle their prey. Karearea are skilful predators that seek out their prey, zero in, then grab their meal with their sharp talons. The karearea is one of 38 species of falcon worldwide but can only be found from Waikato in the North Island, to Stewart Island at the bottom of New Zealand.
