A vintage brass goldfish hangs beneath a handmade paper bead from Ethiopia. From the fish's tail hang three antiqued-brass coloured chains: one holds a pair of leopard-spotted, fibre-optic glass beads; one a stack consisting of a ridged, antiqued-bronze coloured bead, a white, coconut shell bead, and a red seed from Nauru, and a dangling tusk-shaped charm, all wrapped with non-tarnish, artist's quality wire; and one a pair of macaw feathers.
The paper bead is mottled with green, white, and specks of various other colours, and has been lacquered for durability.
The feathers are cruelty free – that is, they were moulted naturally by their avian owners, then collected, cleaned and sterilised before being mounted in these earrings. The supplier from whom I buy my feathers does not support factory farming or the mistreatment of animals in any way.
The blue and gold (or 'blue and yellow') macaw is a large parrot native to South America. It has stunningly vivid plumage in bright yellow, blue, turquoise and green, and is often kept as a pet in various parts of the world. The feathers in this earring came from a pet macaw. They have lovely shades of azure and sky blue, with grey fluff at their tops. Their undersides are grey and blue, with a hint of yellow.
Please note that while I have tried to capture the colours of these feathers as exactly as possible, all feathers change colour depending on the light and your computer monitor may interpret colours differently to mine.
This long, single, 'shoulder-duster' earring is one-of-a-kind, designed to be worn alone or with a different earring in the other ear.
'Goldfish Collection Earring #1' measures 19.5cm from top to bottom. The goldfish measures 30mm long and 16mm across at its widest point, while the macaw feathers are approximately 38mm long including their antiqued-brass coloured cap. The antiqued-brass coloured ear-hook is without nickel.
